Public Meeting Outcome

Thursday 26 October 2006 at 6.00pm Mariana Hall - Sunshine

The Sunshine Mothers held a second public meeting on 26 October to report back to the community as promised on 24 August 2006 where the Sunshine community voted and agreed to the following resolution-

"That the mothers' group be given accreditation to approach elected representatives at a Local, State and Federal level to ascertain what their position is and report back to a future meeting to be called at least one month prior to the upcoming state election. Options to be reported on the website to be presented for consideration.”

Residents, local schools, State Government MPs, union representatives, local councilors and the media were all invited to attend the October meeting. The Sunshine Mothers Group presented an overview of their activities and correspondence to our Local, State and Federal Representatives over the previous two months.

Henry Barlow was then introduced and on behalf of Minister for Sport and Recreation Justin Madden offered the Sunshine Community a 25 metre FINA World Championship pool plus extra water space based on the North Melbourne Pool model, to be relocated to the Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre in May 2007. This offer was made possible through the efforts of Ministerial Adviser Henry Barlow and Justin Madden in conjunction with Trades Hall.

After two hours of questions and comments to Henry Barlow the community voted in favour of accepting the following offer:

  • That a 25 metre FINA World Championship Pool be relocated from the World Championships in May 2007 to be installed outdoors at the Sunshine Swim & Leisure Centre.

  • The Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre will receive an outdoor pool complex in addition to the Stage 1 works that are currently underway.

  • This complex will be based on the North Melbourne Pool model which consists of a 25 metre heated outdoor pool and 3 other outdoor water spaces to adequately replace are recenlty demolished 50 metre outdoor pool.

  • That extra panels be made available for the FINA 25 metre pool to be redesigned to accomadate youth and adults, inclining  to a depth deep enough for diving.

  • That all of the above is fully funded by the State Government.
