Sunshine Mothers came together out of concern of the lack of facilities in Sunshine for our families, teenagers and children to recreate, socialise and exercise. Sunshine Mothers formed on 12 Aug 2006. The Sunshine Mothers’ Group supports the community call for the former Sunvale Primary School site to be maintained for community use and recreation. The former primary school should remain in public hands. Sunshine is ranked as having one of the least amounts of public open space in Victoria. Public open space is a very important need in our suburb! Sunshine is one of Melbourne's most disadvantaged socio-economic areas. Public green space would help in the prevention and reduction of obesity and diabetes which is currently extremely high in our community, and of great concern. The delivery of the outdoor Sunshine 25 metre pool and complex in 2007 has made a positive impact and difference to our community and surrounding suburbs. The Sunvale site location is perfect as it is in close proximity to the pool complex, and would extend the health and recreation hub our community is desperate for. Our kids and our community need and deserve more space to gather, socialise and exercise. Facts about Sunshine: High youth population and growing One of the highest rates of type 2 diabetes in Victoria as well as high obesity rates One of the most disadvantaged communities in Victoria Ideas for community space at Sunvale site: Performance space for musicians/arts performers Adventure play ground Trees and BBQ’s Open space for sport, exercise and recreation Community Hall (there is not a large community hall in Sunshine) With deep regret we must say good bye to one fantastic mother R.I.P Loretta Russo; always up for a challenge, so strong, so caring, wonderfully colourful, energy, self determination and motivation that never went unnoticed..."inspirational". Missing you deeply Loretta x
